In the Middle: Recognizing Mothers in the Sandwich Generation

In the Middle: Recognizing Mothers in the Sandwich Generation

Mother's Day is a time to show appreciation for all of the hard work and dedication that mothers put into raising their children. However, for mothers who find themselves in the sandwich generation, that hard work and dedication can be even more challenging. The sandwich generation refers to those who are caring for both their children and their aging parents at the same time (and this care is disproportionately placed on women). It can be an overwhelming responsibility, but it's one that many mothers take on without hesitation.

These women are often juggling multiple responsibilities and their dedication can often come at a great cost. It can be an incredibly exhausting and lonely journey to take on the burden of caring for both children and older parents simultaneously. We are deeply grateful for all that they do, and we want to acknowledge the challenges they face every day with empathy and support.

One organization that is doing important work to support these caregivers is the Creative Care Council, a project of Caring Across Generations. The Creative Care Council is made up of caregivers, artists, and activists who are committed to creating a more compassionate and just world for caregivers and those they care for. Through their work, they hope to create a world where everyone can age with dignity and caregivers are respected and supported.

The Creative Care Council's work is incredibly important, as it highlights the challenges faced by caregivers in the sandwich generation and the need for more assistance and resources. By shifting the conversation around caregiving and aging, they are helping to promote a more positive, empowering view of this important work.

If you are a caregiver in the sandwich generation, or if you know someone who is, we encourage you to visit their website to learn more about their work. And to all of the mothers out there who are juggling multiple responsibilities and caring for loved ones, thank you for all that you do. We appreciate you more than words can say.

Happy Mother's Day!
