Whether you’re new to the Capella Design community or not, we thought folks could use an update on what we’ve been up to this year. And was it ever a lot! From joining the permanent collection of a museum to winning a design award, here’s what you need to know about how Capella Design is creating distinction in the design-forward mobility product category.

1. We won a Western Living Design 25 award

Earlier this year, renowned local publication Western Living launched its Design 25 Awards. The accolade was given to the best of Western Canadian design in 2024, and we are pleased to say we were included on that list for our Corbel Adjustable Side Table. Here’s what writer Kerri Donaldson had to say about this stylish side table that is designed with an adjustable tray:

"Not just a pretty face, the Corbel by Capella Design takes inspiration from the functional-if-ugly hospital overbed table and swings into the realm of high design. Created with seniors and those with mobility issues in mind, this modern side table is designed with an adjustable tray that can be easily accessed from a chair or bed thanks to a telescoping swing arm."

2. We welcomed Patrick Glinski to the team

Capella founder Kaly Ryan was thrilled to introduce Patrick Glinski to the team as co-founder and chief strategy officer. Patrick brings 15 years of experience working in healthcare innovation.

“During that time, I travelled the world with anthropologists and designers to develop a better understanding of how people with different chronic diseases live their lives,” he says of what expertise he can offer to the Capella community.

Patrick emphasizes the importance of thinking about more than just function when it comes to mobility design – something that perhaps sounds obvious but is part of how Capella has come to differentiate itself within the assistive design market.

3. Our Corbel Adjustable Side Table was acquired by the Museum of Vancouver

Until September 2nd, you can catch the exhibition Reclaim + Repair: The Mahogany Project at the Museum of Vancouver (MOV). Included in the show’s wonderful array of 22 craft-forward products from jewellery to lighting is our very own Corbel Adjustable Side Table. For this exhibition, it was crafted from vintage mahogany that was provided by MOV.

Even more excitingly, the Corbel was selected to become part of the MOV’s permanent collection, meaning our designs are also museum-worthy works of art. Our team is eager to see more assistive design products enter into museums and archives so the message of de-stigmatizing mobility products continues to spread.

4. We were accepted into two accelerators

Our brand is growing by leaps and bounds, and to support this wild ride, we’ve been working hard to create relationships with industry experts to leverage their knowledge and communities in the name of making mobility beautiful.

Capella’s foresight and opportunity for expansion has resulted in us being accepted into two accelerator programs: Remarkable – a disability tech accelerator; and Mass Challenge, an accelerator dedicated to building a “global network for innovators working to solve massive challenges.”

These opportunities mean the world to us – literally – and we can’t wait to share more of our journey with you.
